The fees and finances for non-EU students only

When you attend a Dutch university of applied sciences like HZ, you will have to pay tuition fees, but there are other expenses as well. These financial aspects like student housing, study material, and costs of living are the same for non-EU students as well as EU students. Still, there are loads of differences in fees and finances for non-EU students compared to EU students. Here's an overview of fees and finances for non-EU students only.

In the Netherlands, tuition fees are relatively low. You will have to pay an annual tuition fee. The rates change each year. You can find the current tuition fee that applies to you on the HZ Website. This fee pays for your classes. It does not include costs for travel, housing, books and study material.

Insurance
As a non-EU student, you are required to take out Dutch public health-care insurance and a third-party liability insurance. Also, make sure you have a travel insurance. Three insurance companies in the Netherlands specialise in insurances for foreign students: Aon, IPS and Lippmann. Insurance will cost about € 450 a year.

Visa costs
You will need about € 350 for a visa and a residence permit. If you come from Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea or Japan no visa is required. When you do need a visa, the HZ student office will apply for these documents on your behalf after you have completed the application process.

Proof of financial means
Before you can come and study here, a proof of sufficient means (€ 10,500) is required by the Dutch immigration services. You will transfer this amount to the university and it will be transferred back to your Dutch bank account, when you open one upon arrival.

Funding and scholarships
While common in other countries, scholarships — especially full scholarships — are rare in the Dutch education system due to the relatively low tuition fees. A scholarship you might apply for as a non-EU student, is the Holland Scholarship. It is not a full scholarship and has a value of € 5,000. It is awarded for one year only, under the conditions set out on this HZ page. It has both information on the scholarship itself and on how to apply for it.
