The research centre of the future

Right next to the HZ location in Middelburg is the brand-new Joint Research Centre Zeeland (JRCZ). If you choose to study engineering at HZ, you will start working here from 2023.

JRCZ is a state-of-the-art research laboratory. At JRCZ, you work together with teachers, researchers and the outside world on important social issues. The central themes are water, energy, food and the bio based economy. These topics are the right fit for a delta region like Zeeland.

Bursting with energy

If you soon want to help find solutions to problems within these themes, you will lay the right foundation at JRCZ. In the building, there are a number of different laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment. On each of the four floors, there are makerspaces where you work on projects with teachers and researchers. These makerspaces are buzzing with energy. There is always something to see or do that will inspire you.

Laboratories

In addition, there are laboratories on each floor.

• Ground floor & first floor: see the Engineering Lab where you work with state-of-the-art 3D scanners, laser cutters, digital milling machines and other equipment. On the same floor, you can explore the links between technology and climate in the Geo-Hydro Lab.
• Second floor: In the data lab, you work on data-driven solutions to issues in a Google-like environment. A data lab like this is new in the Netherlands. It is all about big data, data models and data science. As a student, you will learn how to present research results in a creative, attractive way. In doing so, you use state-of-the-art equipment.
• Second & third floors: find labs for analytical and organic chemistry and life sciences. Here, analysis and in-depth research take centre stage. Here, too, you'll see brand-new equipment.
• Third floor: The last lab in JRCZ is the ecology lab. If you are studying in the field of water, you will work in this lab on assignments from companies and organisations in these sectors. They come to JRCZ with questions about things such as food production, climate adaptation, sea level rise and nature-based solutions.

The view

The roof completes the research laboratory. The large staircase on the outside of the building leads to a roof terrace. Here you can study, do research with the available equipment and, of course, relax and enjoy the view.
